Essential Knowledge for Yourself
Your True Calling
Your true calling is the single life path that fills you with enthusiasm, sparks your passion, and keeps you going through the down times.
When teaching is your true calling, you do whatever it takes for your school to succeed. Parents pick up on your passion and are inspired to help wherever they can. Students mirror your enthusiasm with their own efforts. Peers recognize you as a role model and administrators value your dedication. You become a central figure when you follow your lifeâs best path!
LeAnn Morris, a K-5 technology teacher in Carson City, proved that teaching is her true calling when she became Nevadaâs Teacher of the Year. She was inspired by her Grandmother Wille, who taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, during the 1920s. This role model and a series of teachers had an impact on Morris early in her life. The effect must have been profound because she went on to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Education!
Nurture your true calling by recognizing the place you hold in todayâs society. The future of our nation depends on the work you do every day. The gift you haveâto encourage those who struggle with lessons, kids who are unsupported at home, and peers who face their own difficultiesâsets you apart. You make a difference simply by following your heart!
Plan for Your Best
Plan for your best sets your goals anew every day and keeps you focused, passionate, and powerful!
Plan for your best reminds you what all your efforts are really about. When you think about your goals for your career, your students and your school, you are able to see the steps needed to achieve those goals. And when the smaller milestones donât arrive as quickly as youâd like, you can recharge your enthusiasm by recognizing how far youâve already come.
Planning for your best will take different forms depending on each of your goals. When youâre looking to enhance student participation, call on students in rotation until every individual has provided feedback. If your goal is to integrate one of your creative aptitudes into your teaching methods, role-play with students, so everyone can learn about a historical period. Even the simplest plan can have a big impact!
Plan for your best every day. When you first arrive at school, take a few minutes to consider your primary goal for that day. Jot down a reminder on a sticky note and post the note on your desk. Keep the reminder short, just a few words that encapsulate your goal. Every time you return to your desk, youâll be reminded of the dayâs goal. Youâll continually implement actions to move you closer to that goal.
Remember Whoâs in Charge
Remembering whoâs in charge empowers you despite the obligations mandated at local, state, and federal levels.
Remembering whoâs in charge places you in the driverâs seat. When you step up to the command post, you keep students engaged with lessons that inspire their minds and their passions. You feed your own passion and display an approach that others can mimic.
